While New Orleans councilmembers call out Mayor Cantrell, accusing her of downplaying the city’s crime problem, crime watchdog group Metropolitan Crime Commission released its weekly crime bulletin, which shows crime in the city is still trending in the wrong direction.
“We have had at least 153 homicides to date in 2022, a 139% increase relative to 2019, 51% higher relative to 2021. In the month of June 2022, we lost, on average, one person per day to homicide,” says MCC President Rafael Goyeneche.

The crime trend report says shooting incidents in New Orleans are now 11% lower relative to 2021, but remain 91% higher relative to 2019 and 50% higher relative to 2020.
“Another rash of carjacking incidents brings us to 163 for 2022 – a 191% increase relative to 2019 and a 7% increase relative to 2021,” says Goyeneche.
The data also shows armed robberies are on the rise.
“Armed robberies beginning to show higher rate of increase relative to 2021 – at 272 YTD in 2022, we are 30% higher than the same time last year, 51% higher relative to 2020, and 21% higher relative to 2019,” says Goyeneche.
