The city of New Orleans went a full week without one reported homicide or shooting, according to the Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate.
The last time the city managed a week with no homicides or shooting, according to the publication's records, was two years ago around the time of Hurricane Ida's landfall.
The week runs from September 2 through September 8. The streak ended Saturday with a shooting reported around 9:30 a.m. in the 4500 block of Cartier Ave.
The period of relative non-violence includes the Labor Day holiday weekend, marking another departure from recent trends. Holidays from the 4th of July all the way back to Martin Luther King Jr. Day in January experienced at least one homicide or non-fatal shooting.
So far this year, New Orleans has had 22 percent fewer homicides compared to 2022. Data analyst Jeff Asher shows the city is outpacing the rest of the country in the reduction of homicides. Nationwide, homicides have decreased under 12 percent.
The reduction comes as New Orleans struggles to add to its police ranks. The number of New Orleans Police officers fell to historic lows.
