The NOPD has had some recruiting success in the last year, with a slight gain in the number of officers.

According to New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick, the NOPD has 910 officers right now.

"It's an increase of 34," Chief Kirkpatrick said. "We gained 34 over the year."

The chief said that on average, 60 to 70 officers leave NOPD each year. While the increase of more than 30 is noteworthy, the chief said the NOPD is still nearly 300 officers short of their goal.

"We definitely need a minimum of 1,200. So the goal is 1,200," she said.

The chief said they will have some hiring events coming up, as they look to build a recruit class for the police academy. But she said as badly as they need new officers, she will not lower standards, and said winners won't shrink from the challenge of joining the NOPD.
