A man suspected of running over and killing a woman as she rode her bicycle in New Orleans East in June is in custody, New Orleans Police announced Friday.
Detectives arrested 18-year-old Jose Javier Suazo for the June 14 incident at North I-10 Service Road and Bundy Road.
"At about 9:00 p.m. on June 14, an adult female was riding her bicycle westbound on North I-10 Service Road along with another bicyclist, when a 2008 Dodge Caravan approached from her rear. The vehicle then crashed into the rear of the victim's bicycle, ejecting her from the bicycle onto the roadway," said police.
Police say the driver of the Dodge fled the scene without notifying police or seeking medical help for the woman.
Police say the recovered the minivan after finding it abandoned and burned in an apparent attempt to destroy evidence.
Suazo is charged with hit and run driving involving death or serious bodily injury, of reckless operation of a vehicle, obstruction of justice and of falsifying a police report.
