Speaking at a press conference outside NOPD headquarters on Friday, Chief Shaun Ferguson says he is authorizing paid overtime for homicide detectives as they are seeing a spike in violent crime incidents in the city.
"We have noticed a significant spike in violent crime," said Ferguson. "None of which I can specifically state are related .... We are aware, we see the spike and we are investigating."
Over the past 48 hours, four people were shot on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, one of the four victims died from their injuries.
Four people were also shot outside a church on Annunciation Street. Two of the victims are dead.
A man was also shot on the coroner of Franklin Avenue and Verbena Street. He died on the scene.
And just before Chief Ferguson gave his press conference, the department reported another homicide, where a man was found shot to death inside a vehicle in the 1100 block of North Claiborne Avenue.
