NOPD Chief: This has been a very frustrating weekend for us all

New Orleans Police Chief Shaun Ferguson addressed the violence that happened on Bourbon Street for the second weekend in a row.

Five people were injured in Sunday’s shooting in the French Quarter, which is seeing a dangerous trend of gun violence on a crowded Bourbon Street.

“We had thee homicides and four shootings over the weekend, 18 victims of gunfire, four of which have died since Friday,” said Chief Ferguson.

Those 18 victims include five people who were shot at Bourbon and St. Peters Streets. Officers arrested a 17-year-old from Houma, and earlier that night officers arrested a 15-year-old from Alabama for caring a gun on Bourbon Street.

“Outsiders are bringing weapons to the streets of New Orleans,” Ferguson said.

Chief Ferguson says in the shooting incidents that happened in the French Quarter, his officers were able to respond quickly because they were positioned strategically throughout the area.

“Our officers were Johnny-on-the-spot, they were right there in the area where this occurred in which they heard the gunfire, they responded to the gunfire they called the incident in while responding to it, so that is evident that we are monitoring on a daily basis, we are adjusting our deployment on a daily basis,” said Ferguson.

Ferguson says his officers are making arrests.

“Within the span of nine hours, on Saturday going into Sunday, regarding this Bourbon Street shooting, our Eight District officers arrested three individuals for possession of a firearm on Bourbon Street,” said Ferguson.
