NOPD Chief: Recent violence in the city is 'very alarming'

New Orleans Police Chief Shaun Ferguson calls the series of shooting incidents over the weekend 'very alarming'.

Chief Ferguson says the recent series of fatal and non-fatal shootings that happened in the city, abolished the department’s progress it has made in reducing violent crime.

“The month of July was the second month in a row in which we had a reduction in homicides, 23 going against 25, overall crime was down last week compared to the previous week,” said Ferguson. “This weekend just put a black eye and dampened the spirits of what we had been accomplishing over the past few weeks.”

Five people were shot in a shooting incident on Bourbon Street early Sunday morning. It started as an argument between two men who, Ferguson says knew each other. One of the men is in custody.

Less than two hours later four more people were shot in a separate shooting in Treme. Three others were hospitalized.
