Gun violence erupted in the French Quarter as a man opened fire, hitting five people at the near the intersection of Bourbon and Orleans around 2am.
That man is in custody.
The gunfire set off a melee among people partying on Bourbon, they scurried into area bars for safety.

Both Mayor Cantrell and Police Superintendent Shaun Ferguson went to the scene, but they did not speak with the media.
