Drivers who think New Orleans cops will ignore their traffic violations are straight-up wrong, New Orleans Police Superintendent Ann Kirkpatrick told WWL's Newell Normand on Friday.
"The last month or two months, we have gone back to saying, you're going to start, officers start doing traffic stops," said Kirkpatrick. "Let's practice the basics. We've got to get brilliant in the basics again."
Chief Kirkpatrick said she wants residents of New Orleans to see their police officers out there working for them.
"Our community wants a sense, that's that perception, that feeling of 'hey, we are a law and order community,'" the chief said. "Yes, we have our cultures, and as long as we can have balance. We can't have chaos."
Her comments came up when Newell asked the chief about the apparent lawlessness that has showed up in the 100 block of North Carrollton Avenue recently. Over the weekend, a security guard for Wit's Inn bar in that area was shot and killed.
Police arrested a suspect days later.
