The NOPD federal consent decree is over.
U.S. District Judge Susie Morgan ended the decree Wednesday afternoon, after more than a dozen years of U.S. government oversight.
The NOPD began the two-year "sustainment" phase just last January, but both the Trump Justice Department and the Cantrell administration sought an early end to the decree.
Judge Morgan said all parties should be proud of their accomplishments.
New Orleans D.A. Jason Williams said afterwards that the NOPD's reforms went "above and beyond the requirements of the consent decree."
"The city and the NOPD voluntarily entered into this consent decree, most cities do not," said Williams. "NOPD Leadership and rank and file have embraced institutional reform efforts, most departments do not."
