As the New Orleans Police Department sees sustained crime reduction, the department is also restocking the ranks with increased attention on officer retention and recruitment.
Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick says that after years of decline, they are now seeing the number of police officers increasing.
"We are back up above the nine-hundred mark of sworn staff. We are now at nine-hundred-and-ten," she announced.
Last year the force fell below nine-hundred officers for the first time since the 1940s.
The chief says more cops are coming soon.
"We have a new class of cadets, these are 18 to 21 year olds, and we have a class of 50 cadets."
Kirkpatrick says an academy class should start in the next few weeks.
Dozens of Louisiana State Troopers are also coming to help suppliment the NOPD ranks with the new Troop NOLA.
Historically NOPD leaders have wanted a force of 1,500 or more officers.
The NOLA Coalition is pushing for rebuilding the NOPD back to about 1,200 officers.
