NOPD releases body-cam video from New Year's Day Bourbon St. attack

Video from a New Orleans Police officer's body-warn camera shows Shamsud-din Jabbar opening fire on officer moments after crashing his rented truck in the 300 block of Bourbon St. early in the morning of New Year's Day.

Police showed a portion of the video to news media Friday morning.

The video is available on the NOPD YouTube page. Click here to view the video (age restrictions apply).

The video shows two officers standing on the trick's left side with their guns drawn, aimed at the driver's seat of the rented Ford F-150. Police said a third officer, not visible in the video, was standing with his gun drawn in front of the vehicle.

Jabbar is obscured by the vehicle's airbags, but as the fourth officer approached, his body camera footage shows a muzzle flash erupt from the driver's seat. As that officer dove for cover, several shots can be heard.

The fusillade of bullets ended Jabbar's life and with it, his attack on the French Quarter.

NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick says the three officers who returned fire were placed on administrative reassignment per department policy, but all have since been cleared to return to regular duty.

The two officers who were injured have been released from the hospital. In addition to their gunshot wounds, one officer also suffered a broken shoulder, Kirkpatrick said.
