The NOPD wants to add more automated license plate readers to its crime-fighting arsenal. NOPD chief Shaun Ferguson says they are an important tool in helping track down criminals.
"We're requesting $1 million for new license plate readers and updates for some of the existing cameras that we do have now," Ferguson told the New Orleans City Council Budget Committee. "Already this year, we had several high-profile shooting along the interstate."
NOPD began using the cameras in 2017. With shootings happening on the I-10 with alarming frequency, the chief says they want to get some of the cameras to cover the highway.
"I think that's going to be very important as we try to address violent crime," said Ferguson.
