New Orleans Police have made significant gains in solving murder cases.

"We average, right now, 75 percent clearance," New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said. "For every four perpetrators, three have been held accountable."

It's a dramatic improvement and far above the national average. Crime Commission president Rafael Goyeneche says taking a murder suspect off the streets can also help bring down other crimes.

"That means that they're not out on the street to commit not just other crimes of violence but other property and drug offenses as well," said Goyeneche.

He said it also prevents criminals from becoming victims of retaliatory violence, which exacerbates the city's homicide problem.
