The New Orleans Police Department is warning people about a phone scam involving con artists pretending to be NOPD officers and demanding money.
"The NOPD was recently notified of two recent incidents where citizens received phone calls from persons identifying themselves as NOPD officers with the 'Warrant Unit' threatening to arrest the victims and stating that they faced life in prison if they failed to pay $500," the NOPD said in a new release.
NOPD says at no time will officers contact residents and demand money or threaten arrest.
Police say anyone who receives a call like this to hang up and immediately call 911 to report the incident.
NOPD also says residents should also contact them if they receive a call from (504) 641-7421, which is a number reported to be used by a scammer.
