Two women were carjacked within 12 hours says the New Orleans Police Department.
According to an NOPD police report, the first carjacking happened on Tuesday at about 7:53 p.m. in the 100 block of Marais Street just one block off a busy Canal Street.
Police say a 28-year-old woman was exiting her vehicle when a man armed with a gun approached her. The man told the woman to get out of her vehicle and then stole her cell phone before fleeing in her vehicle.
Then, at about 12:52 a.m. on Wednesday, another woman was carjacked in the city. This time, it happened in the 3300 block of Constance Street.
Police say an unarmed man approached a 22-year-old woman while she was parking her vehicle.
They say the man demanded her vehicle and she complied then the man drove off in her 2013 grey Mercedes with LA 685DBK.
According to the New Orleans City Council Crime Dashboard, carjackings across the city have climbed 26%, which equals 277 carjacking incidents in 2021 compared to 226 carjackings in 2020.
