Retired trapper and cattleman Philip Sharp, a lifelong resident of St. Tammany Parish, died this week at the age of 111. Before his death, he was thought to the second-oldest living man in the United States, The Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate reports.
Sharp grew up on a farm in an area north of Covington, long before the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway connected St. Tammany to New Orleans. Later, he bought his own 70-acre plot of land and raised cattle, sheep, hogs, and mules, and grew sweet potatoes and sugar cane.
Sharp said he did not have any secrets that helped him live as long as he did. "I just never quite going," he once said.
