As the holiday season approaches, mental health professionals are reminding people that this time of year isn’t joyful for everyone. Clinical psychologist Dr. Judy Ho says many feel pressure to appear happy, even when they’re struggling internally.

“We shouldn’t just wish people good tidings, we should really check on their well-being,” Dr. Ho said.

She notes that social media, movies, and streaming content often create the illusion that everyone else is thriving, which can make those who are struggling feel even more isolated.

Dr. Ho says there are key signs to look for when someone may not be okay. Withdrawal from friends or family, avoiding activities they normally enjoy, or quickly changing the subject away from mood or feelings can all signal emotional distress.

In more severe cases, the holiday season can trigger self-harm behaviors in people who are already vulnerable.

“If someone seems to be having those thoughts, get them the proper help immediately,” she said.

Dr. Ho stresses that while the holidays can be a joyful time for many, it’s important to recognize that others may be quietly hurting. And above all, she says, “It’s okay to not be okay.”
