The National Weather Service has changed its assessment of the tornado that struck Slidell, categorizing it as an EF-2 twister.

The change came after National Weather Service officials surveyed the damage and noted bent metal beams on buildings and other significant structure damage. That led the assessment team to conclude that the tornado had winds withs speeds estimated to be 120 miles per hour.

According to the NWS survey team, the twister touched down one mile north of Eden Isle and moved east-northeast. In addition to destroying homes and businesses, the tornado also knocked down trees and power poles after crossing the Old Spanish Trail.

The tornado finally dissipated in Pearl River, but not before knocking down a billboard on I-10 and causing damage near the Louisiana Welcome Center.
