Nyx nixed? Council to consider revoking permit of once popular parade

Is the New Orleans City Council getting ready to nix the Krewe of Nyx? The parade's future is up for a vote today at the New Orleans City Council meeting.

Nyx once boasted the largest membership of any Mardi Gras krewe, but membership plummeted during backlash over a social media post by founder Julie Lea that some took as dismissing the Black Lives Matter movement in the wake of the George Floyd murder.

Then came controversy over how members' dues were being spent, and the krewe lost more members as some left to join or form new krewes.

New Orleans City Council Vice President J.P. Morrell says Nyx turned to some prohibited activities to try and get those numbers back up.

"On the day of the parade, in the throw bags of Nyx were favors that were also advertisements for membership," Morrell said. "They were also using their subsidized, taxpayer ride through the city, to throw out throws recruiting members."

Nyx attorney Doug Sunseri told NOLA.com that the krewe had not received notification of the pending vote, and said Nyx is being treated like a "political punching bag."
