One dead, another in custody after Christmas night drunk driving crash

A Raceland man is facing vehicular homicide, DWI, and other charges after a crash that left one person dead.

According to a spokesman for Louisiana State Police, the crash happened Christmas night around 8 p.m. on LA 308 near Marcello Boulevard in Lafourche Parish.


The spokesperson says a car driven by Francisco Lopez-Mendoza ran off the road in a curve, hit a utility pole, and flipped. A passenger in the car died at the scene. Lopez-Mendoza suffered moderate injuries and was hospitalized.

Troopers have not released the name of the deceased because they are still in the process of contacting that person’s family.

According to the spokesman, troopers found that Lopez-Mendoza was impaired while driving and arrested him at the hospital. Toxicology samples have been submitted for analysis as part of the ongoing investigation.
