A year after the Smitty Supply plant explosion in Roseland, questions about potential environmental contamination and its impact on residents are still unresolved.
Independent environmental testing expert Scott Smith says he has collected more than 300 soil, water and surface-wipe samples from 75 different sites stretching from Tangipahoa Parish to Jefferson Parish.
Smith says the results continue to show contamination above health screening levels.
“If the LDQ or the EPA or anybody else took the samples from the same location I did, they’re gonna get the same exact results, which is toxic contamination above health screening level,” Smith said.
Smith has continued testing throughout the year since the explosion at the Smitty Supply facility in Roseland, an incident that raised concerns about potential exposure and environmental impacts in surrounding communities.
For residents, Smith says the concern is far from over.
The ongoing testing is intended to provide a clearer picture of what may remain in the soil, water and other surfaces in areas affected by the explosion.
While questions remain about the extent of contamination and what additional action may be needed, Smith's findings keep the focus on the health concerns residents continue to raise one year later.
