The Orleans Parish Prison escapee who escaped overnight and was arrested in the French Quarter just before noon on Friday is the suspect awaiting trial in an Uptown New Orleans shooting and carjacking that left a man fighting for his life. He also has a history of escaping from jail.

Kendell Myles, 19, is awaiting trial for attempted murder in the July 2022 incident that left Scott Toups in intensive care for more than a month. Prosecutors accused Myles and another suspect of shooting and carjacking Toups while he was trying to drop off Mardi Gras beads for recycling.
An Orleans Parish judge attempted to quash those charges, accusing the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office of waiting too long to file the indictment. An appeals court later reversed that decision.

Myles allegedly committed that crime after he broke out of the Bridge City Center for Youth. Myles was one of six juvenile center inmates who escaped the jail during the 2022 jailbreak.

Louisiana State Police arrested Myles following Friday's jailbreak, catching him near the Hotel Monteleone on Royal Street.
