The Orleans Parish School Board this week voted to roll forward its property tax millage.

It means an annual increase of about $100 for a home valued at $250,000, according to the school board.

The school board said it needs the extra revenue to offset losses in state funding and the end of federal pandemic aid.

"This is an investment, overall," Orleans schools CFO Stuart Gay told WWL-TV. "It has a positive impact, not just on the students and the teachers, but also on the community as a whole."

But that investment may shrink, said Greater New Orleans Housing Alliance President Andreanecia Morris. The affordable housing advocate said making it more expensive for families to live in New Orleans will not help reverse the district's decline in enrollment.

"Their issue is and we understand that they have shortfalls because of enrollment issues," said Morris. "We know that those enrollment issues are rooted in this affordable housing crisis. So, making it worse doesn't solve your problem."
