Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming says 143,000 unclaimed property checks, totaling over $34 million will be mailed at the end of the month.
Fleming says his office is holding on to $1.2 billion in unclaimed property and the checks they will send out on May 30th is the result of working with the Department of Revenue to connect the unclaimed property with the person’s address.
“It’s said that 1 in 6 Louisianans is owed money,” Fleming said. “Christmas will come early, this will kind of be Christmas in June when the checks land next month.”
This is the largest batch of checks mailed since 2018, reaching residents in every parish. Fleming says 2,500 claims that exceed the automatic check limit will receive claim forms with instructions.
“In cases where the money is at a larger scale we’ll be notifying these households giving them a form to complete there by verifying their identity.”
Fleming emphasized that the blue checks, featuring the Treasury’s logo, are legitimate and urged recipients to cash them, noting that unclaimed funds often result from outdated addresses, but says no one can spend your money but you.
“This money is cordon off against the legislature and the Governor. They can not spend your money. So, if you don’t claim it your heirs one day will claim it.”
