If you love parades, then you'll absolutely love this weekend. Two more parades are on tap for Saturday and Sunday, with both honoring the patron saints of two ethnic groups that helped to define New Orleans.
The St. Joseph's Society will honor the region's Italian-American heritage and the patron saint of Sicily with Saturday's St. Joseph's Parade. That parade will begin at 6 p.m. at the corner of Convention Center Boulevard and Poydras Street. The parade will then make its way to the French Quarter. Eighty maids, sixteen floats, and more than five-hundred men of Italian descent will take part in that parade. The events end with a ticketed gala at the Riverside Hilton.
On Sunday, Jefferson Parish will pay tribute to the area's Italian and Irish connections. The Louisiana Irish-Italian Parade will roll at noon on the traditional Veterans Boulevard route. If you want to spare yourself a trip to the grocery store, go to this parade. Riders will be throwing a number of food items--pasta, cabbage, potatoes, carrots, and even Lucky Charms--from their floats.
