Peak fossil fuel? LSU expert skeptical

A report by the International Energy Agency says we will hit peak demand for fossil fuels before the year 2030. One LSU energy expert is not convinced.

"I actually think it's pretty unlikely," said LSU energy studies Prof. Greg Upton.

Upton says maybe the industrialized nations will need less fossil fuels, but "we're seeing a lot of the growth in fossil fuel demand really coming form the developing world."

Upton says Louisiana is getting ready for the transition, though, with more development in bio-fuels, carbon-capture, and wind energy. And even as carmakers switch to electric vehicles and fossil fuel demand slows, the world will still need petrochemicals in other forms.

"Those EVs actually require more of other products we produces, such as those chemicals and plastics and those kind of things which we also produce here in Louisiana," Upton said.
