The New Orleans Police department is investigating a fatal vehicle accident that left a 55-year-old man dead in the street.

Police say the traffic fatality happened in the early hours of Tuesday morning on Louisiana Avenue and South Liberty Street.

“At about 6:38 a.m. NOPD Sixth District officers responded to a call of an injured pedestrian at the location. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 55-year-old male lying in the street. Emergency Medical Services transported the victim to a local hospital where he was later declared deceased,” says an NOPD report.

Through the investigation, detectives determined that the victim was standing on the neutral ground on Louisiana Avenue and stepped into the street when he was struck by a pick-up truck. The male driver of the pick-up truck stayed on the scene and called 911.

According to police, neither the driver nor the pedestrian was impaired at the time.

The driver remained on scene and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation and is not suspected of any charges.

The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office will officially identify the victim in this incident after the completion of an autopsy and the notification of the family.

Anyone with additional information on this incident is asked to call NOPD Traffic Fatality Investigator Mike Baldassaro  at 504-658-6205.
