A pedestrian is dead after state troopers say he was struck by two cars while trying to cross a busy highway near LaPlace.

The crash happened around 7:30 p.m. Saturday on U. S. 51 near Woodland Drive.

According to investigators, the pedestrian was first struck by the side mirror of an oncoming pickup truck. The impact of that strike knocked the pedestrian to the pavement. Moments later, another oncoming car ran over the pedestrian. An EMS crew took the pedestrian to a hospital, where he later died.

Troopers say the area where the crash happened has limited lighting and that the pedestrian wore dark-colored clothing, both of which limited the drivers' ability to see him.

The crash remains under investigation.
