An Instagram story posted by New Orleans Pelicans player Zion Williamson has some of his fans concerned, according to multiple reports.
“On Thursday, during what has been a tumultuous offseason for the 23-year-old Pelicans star, a snippet from The Notorious B.I.G. song ‘Suicidal Thoughts’ appeared on Williamson’s Instagram Story,” the New York Post reported.
This post also included a transcription of the lyrics “I can’t believe suicide’s on my f mind, I wanna leave.”
“Williamson’s alleged ‘cryptic’ posting of the album’s lyrics on his Instagram account had several fans expressing concern for the Pelicans’ big man,” said Sports Illustrated.
This isn’t the first time Williamson has expressed his love for the album, which was released in 1994. Notorious B.I.G., also known as Biggie Smalls, died three years later in a drive-by homicide at age 24.
Last year, Williamson said that the way Smalls’ wrote about “stress, what he was dealing with, just feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders and you feel like you’re standing alone,” on the album really helped “shift his mindset.”
According to The New York Post, this offseason has been difficult for Williamson, since he has been at the center of trade rumors. He was selected No. 1 overall in the 2019 NBA Draft, but played in just 29 games for the Pelicans during the 2022-23 season due to injuries, the outlet said.
He’s also revealed that he struggles with his weight. More drama came this year as a claim from former adult film star Moriah Mills that she had recent sexual relations with Williamson. This allegation came shortly after news that Williamson’s apparent girlfriend is expecting a baby with him.
“Williamson is under immense pressure. Thus, mental-health checks are important,” said Sports Illustrated. “Being a top draft pick, who stands 6-6, 284 pounds, and only playing in 114 NBA games your first four seasons, you’ll have to understand the scrutiny. It’s another element of the game, especially for superstars. How Zion’ responds – mentally and health-wise – is now in his hands. We shall see.”
Another post on Williamson’s Instagram this week seemed positive: “Paris showed out with some of the best dunks I’ve seen in a while.
Thanks for having me!” he said.
