The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development today is working to determine if there is structural damage to Interstate 55 near Manchac after a fiery crash in smoke and fog yesterday.

"At least 158 vehicles were involved," Louisiana State Police posted. "Seven (7) fatalities have been confirmed. Over 25 individuals were transported to area hospitals."

Visibility was near zero amid dense fog mixed with marsh fire smoke.

Many of the vehicles were not only crumpled and crushed, but also burned.

"A portion of the crash scene caught on fire shortly after the initial incident... It is possible that additional fatalities could be located."

As of 3:30am today tow trucks were still lined up in a convoy; removing what was left of burnt out cars, trucks and SUV's.

"The removal of vehicles will take additional time. Following the cleanup of the interstate, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development will inspect the bridge for any deficiencies."

I-55 remains closed in both directions between Ponchatoula and LaPlace.
