New Orleans Police say an employee at the Hyatt Regency hotel tackled a man threatening to kill three people at the hotel early Saturday morning.
According to police, 37-year-old Shaun Chapman was holding the three on the third floor, until one managed to escape and find help. The Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate reports a maintenance worker wrestled Chapman to the ground and was holding him for police when Chapman tried to run. That's when an off-duty Louisiana State Trooper intervened, until NOPD could arrive and arrest Chapman.
According to reports, Chapman pulled his knife on a man waiting at a bus stop outside the hotel and ordered him inside. Then Chapman took a security guard hostage with them, and proceeded to a bar on the third floor, taking the bartender captive as well.
Police say Chapman told the bartender she would be "first to die" for trying to get help, before the maintenance worker arrived and disarmed him.
