Poloncarz updates Erie County on COVID numbers

Mark Poloncarz

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz says 26 people are currently hospitalized with COVID19. He warns younger people are getting the coronavirus.

Poloncarz said the people in hospitals are not the same people. Every day, people are released and new people are admitted. He notes people aged 20-29 make up the largest demographic that have confirmed cases (1,034). Poloncarz said "these are people who are either working or going to bars." 899 people are between 30-39. 758 people who caught coronavirus are age 80+.

He says roughly a quarter of the new cases (79) last week in Erie County were people between ages 20-29. 53 people between ages 0-19 were the second highest group who are confirmed to have the virus.

Poloncarz also notes he's working with educational leaders and that they want to avoid a situation like SUNY Oneonta. He said people who have tested positive were either already sick with symptoms, lived off campus, or attended house parties.
