According to the New Orleans Police Department, the suspect in last night’s shooting of Tulane University Police Officer Martinus Mitchum was not only charged in the shooting death but also facing an armed robbery charge.
The Major Offense Log states around the same time as the shooting, a man was approached by a suspect brandishing a gun.
The suspect reportedly made off with the victim’s medallion chain.
It is not known if the security personnel knew of the armed robbery when they refused suspect John Shallerhorn entrance to the arena because he was not wearing a mask.
Shallerhorn initiated a confrontation with security personnel and Officer Mitchum intervened and was escorting Shallerhorn out of the area when the suspect is alleged to have drawn a gun and opened fire, hitting Mitchum in the chest. Shallerhorn then placed his weapon on the ground and was apprehended.
Mitchum later died at University Medical Center.
