A new study out of Carnegie Melon University says daily marijuana use in the United States now outpaces daily alcohol consumption.

A local recovery expert says the same can be said here in Louisiana.

Mason Smith is at Avenues Recovery Center in Metairie.

“Marijuana, at this point, is the most widely used elicit substance in the United States.”

He says most patients seeking help for drug or alcohol use are also habitual marijuana users.

“It is safe to say that the majority of our patients that come in; whether marijuana is their primary drug of choice, or whether it is secondary of tertiary; It is always in the mix.”

The study found that with social stigma around marijuana fading and an entire industry creating consumables and vape products, use is on the rise.

Smith adds that the weed people are using now is stronger than ever.

“The vapes now with marijuana allow people to consume a much higher dosage.”

The study found that as pot regulations relax, its popularity and general acceptance is likely to keep growing.
