President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden visit New Orleans today.
They will go to Tulane University as part of the Biden Cancer Moonshot initiative.
The visit runs from roughly 1:00pm to 5:00pm. Secret Service, state and local police are expected to shut down traffic between the airport and the Tulane campus for the motorcade. Expect extensive traffic delays across Kenner, Metairie and New Orleans multiple times during that four hour window.
Historically I-10 closures for the presidential motorcade lead to heavy delays on other streets as interstate traffic seeks other routes.
For security purposes, the Secret Service does not release specific times, routes or closures for the presidential motorcade.
The visit will focus on the Bidens' effort to reduce cancer deaths in the United States.
The Cancer Moonshot Initiative has two major goals according to the White House:
"The Cancer Moonshot is mobilizing efforts toward achieving two clear goals that the President and First Lady set: To prevent more than 4 million cancer deaths by 2047 and to improve the experience of people who are touched by cancer."
President Biden's son, Beau Biden, died from brain cancer in 2015 at the age of 46. Jill Biden's sister was previously diagnosed with lymphoma and recovered.
CBS News reports that two years ago, the Biden administration re-launched the Cancer Moonshot Initiative. Last week, HHS awarded nearly $9 million to improve access to cancer screenings and connections to follow up treatments in underserved communities. This builds upon previous Biden Cancer Moonshot investments: $11 million in 2023 and $5 million in 2022.
First Lady Jill Biden visited the Louisiana Cancer Research Center in March of 2023.
The last time President Biden visited the New Orleans area was in September of 2021 to survey the damage caused by Hurricane Ida.
