Everyone in New Orleans should make at least some money, says Mayor LaToya Cantrell, and this week, she announced a plan to deliver universal basic income for young people in the city.
Mayor Cantrell, with the help of MasterCard and Mobility Capital Finance, announced a ten month pilot program that will guarantee income for 16-to-24-year-olds in the city.
"It will connect our most vulnerable residents to meaningful financial equity and efficiently linking them to city services.,," Cantrell said.
She said that includes everything from doubling as a public library card to paying public transit fares. The mayor said it will also include access to financial education.
The program will be funded with a $500,000 grant from Mayors for a Guaranteed Income, a group of mayors of U.S. cities that advocate for all citizens to have a source of minimum cash flow.
The program will launch in mid-2022.
