The property manager of a New Orleans East apartment who was wounded in a shooting last month now faces charges in the incident as well. Alonzo Horton was booked today on a charge of aggravated assault with a firearm, WWL-TV reports.
Deputy Constable Warren Smith was also injured in the shooting when he accompanied Horton in serving eviction papers to 23-year-old Jason Tillman.
According to reports, the situation was actually calm until Horton inserted himself into the process.
Tillman was arrested after a day-long manhunt tracked him down in Mid-City. But his initial booking was on an unrelated probation violation, and the only charge Tillman faces in the October 5 incident is being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
First City Court Constable Lambert Bossiere Jr. told the TV station this is why deputy constables "always tell the landlord to step back and let us handle the eviction."
Bossiere says Deputy Smith is on his way to a full recovery.
