Today New Orleans City Councilmember Lesli Harris introduced a proposal to re-name Lee Circle. The circle was one targeted for renaming since it is currently named after Confederate Army General Robert E. Lee.
The statue of Lee was removed from the circle in 2017, and the New Orleans City Council Street Renaming Commission recommended "Egalité Circle" as a replacement.
Harris is instead proposing "Harmony Circle."
"Renaming Lee Circle is a critical step to honoring values that truly matter to our city, rather than glorifying racist figures of the past," said Harris. "The word harmony reflects the city of New Orleans, where we all join together to make our community whole, unique, and joyful."
The proposed name change will be considered and taken up for a vote by the full council at a yet-to-be determined meeting date.
