Qualifying starts today for all 6 of Louisiana's congressional seats

Qualifying for the November elections in Louisiana -- including all of its congressional seats -- begins today.

"We are actually the last state across our country to be undergoing candidate qualification," said pollster John Couvillon of JMC Analytics.

Louisiana's newly redrawn Sixth Congressional District is likely to get a lot of attention. It creates a majority-minority district, but only just barely.

"They brought the black population down to just over 50 percent of registered voters," said Couvillon, who points out the district is under a pending court challenge.

"So I would not be terribly surprised if perhaps there will be more changes by the 2026 elections," he said.

There are other races on the Louisiana ballot besides President of the United States and Congress.

"We have a PSC race," Couvillon said. "We have a Supreme Court race, there'll be some assorted local races around the state."

And because the president is at the top of the ballot, Couvillon says these races will get higher turnout than even last year's gubernatorial election.
