Facing a recall campaign early in her second term as mayor of New Orleans, LaToya Cantrell seemed to engender a quid pro quo while speaking with city employees.
In a video posted to social media, Cantrell was recorded speaking to Sewerage and Water Board employees and campaigning for their support.
"I have your back. I'm asking you to have mine because it's not about LaToya Cantrell," the embattled mayor said in the tweeted recording.
She then defended her job performance, saying, "If anyone could do it, anyone would. But it's hard."
Cantrell has frequently been targeted for criticism throughout her tenure as the Crescent City's mayor. Recently though, the heat has been turned up considerably by a recall campaign that appears to be gaining steam.
With the city's police force hamstrung by incredible workforce shortfalls, the crime rate has continued to tick upward. That police shortage hampered the city's first Mardi Gras celebration in 2022 by severely altering many traditional parade routes and led to a warning from the mayor recently that the 2023 Carnival season may be cancelled, a statement Cantrell was forced to walk back days later amid heavy backlash.
Meanwhile, the mayor's travel budget has also undergone recent scrutiny after a first-class flight to France left taxpayers footing a $17,000 bill while many are still struggling to make ends meet under the weight of the nation's inflation woes.
The account that tweeted the latest video of the mayor, @FixNOLA, posted the recording with the caption, "With a recall petition filed, is this an appropriate plea for the mayor to make to city employees on city time?"
