As the last year of Mayor Latoya Cantrell's final term starts to wind down and she begins the lame duck part of her time in office, the landscape for those hoping to replace her will continue to take shape.

Head of the Political Science Department at UNO, Dr. Ed Chervenak, says this is the time for those who wish to throw their hat in the ring to start making their pitch.

"It's time to start getting the campaign teams together, fundraising, and getting endorsements."

Now that Councilperson Helena Moreno has made formal her intent to run for mayor of New Orleans, we get a better look into the start of her campaign.

Chervenak says, "She has hit the ground before most other people already putting together a team and raising funds."

Other names tossed around as interested in the position, Councilperson Oliver Thomas and State Senator Royce Duplessis.

But that won't be all. According to Chervenak there will be quite the line of those interested in the position.

"There were fourteen people that ran for mayor in the last race and that was with an incumbent on the ballot. We should see a double digit list of candidates to choose from."
