The record number of nationwide job openings continues to grow, alongside growing record numbers of workers quitting their jobs. Job openings in March rose to 11.5 million while 4.5 million workers quit their jobs, 152,000 more than in February.
An LSU Economist told WWL this national phenomenon is impacting every major Southeast Louisiana industry right now.
“It really doesn’t matter if it is an industry that is doing great like the construction industry, or whether it’s an industry like the oil and gas extraction industry in the southern part of the state, which is in kind of a funk, even they are still having trouble finding workers,” said Dr. Loren Scott.
The economist said local sectors are pumping up wage rates, offering bonuses, and trying to entice workers with all kinds of benefits, but it’s just not enough in this market.
So who’s benefiting right now? Young workers, according to Scott.
“From the labor standpoint this is a really good time to be starting in the workforce, just remember, show up to work,” said Scott. “There are I think going to be a lot of opportunities for people with all kinds of degrees as it turns out.”
