The United States Coast Guard is searching for a private airplane that lost contact with air traffic controllers while over Lake Pontchartrain.

According to our partners at WWL-TV, someone notified watchstanders about the missing plane around 6:30 p.m. Monday. The plane, a Cessna, was last reported about four miles north of New Orleans when ground control lost contact with the aircraft.

No word on how many people were on board.

The Coast Guard has deployed a helicopter and a boat to search for the plane.

This is a developing story.
