If you think the price of groceries at the grocery store is high now, Louisiana Commissioner of the Department of Agriculture, Mike Strain says buckle up because food prices are only going to increase even higher.
“When you look at the price of groceries it is reflected in the cost of production anywhere from seven months to 18 months before, and so when you look at our cost of production, our cost of fuel, our cost of fertilizer, our cost of everything... that is going to be reflected in next year’s crop,” Strain explained to WWL’s Tommy Tucker.
As inflation drives up the cost of groceries at the grocery store, Strain says it will only get more expensive if nothing is done to lower the cost of agricultural production.
“What we got to try to do with inflation is get a control on the cost,” said Strain. “We look at the consumer price index, that is what you see at the grocery store. We have to really look hard and get a control on the producer’s price index to get that down.”
Strain recommends going back to personal home gardens to offset the rising cost at the grocery store.
