The New Orleans Saints open preseason play tomorrow against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and a former Saints quarterback believes the Black-and-Gold put on an outstanding display during this week's joint practices.
"I thought that we won the practices," WWL's Bobby Hebert said Friday.
According to Hebert, the Saints' running offense shined during joint workouts with the Jaguars. Hebert told WWL's Tommy Tucker that he was concerned that Jacksonville's top-ranked rushing defense would pose problems for the Saints offense during this week's joint practice. Hebert said the offensive line put those fears to rest by creating gaps for the Black-and-Gold's rushers.
"They actually blocked Jacksonville in the running game pretty good," Hebert said. "I'm not talking about 40- (or) 50-yard chunk runs--just those bring your lunch pail to work kind of (runs), four-yard gains (and) five-yard gains. That was impressive."
Hebert added that he was also impressed by how the defense played, noting that safety Julian Blackmon intercepted Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence on the second play during Thursday's practice.
"I thought the defense really set the tone against Trevor Lawrence and the Jags," Hebert said
Hebert also lauded the defensive line's play.
"I know we had at least six to eight sacks," Hebert said. "Chase Young cannot be blocked. He is such a physical specimen."
The Saints play Jacksonville at 3:00 tomorrow in the Superdome. Pregame coverage begins at 11:00 on WWL.
