Work to replace a major water main running under South Claiborne Avenue in Central City will reduce the six-lane thoroughfare to four lanes for a distance of about 1/3 of a mile between Louisiana Avenue and Third Street, starting January 2.
The work will also prevent vehicles from crossing Claiborne at Louisiana Ave., Toledano St., Washington Ave., and Fourth St.
The Sewerage & Water Board says the work will close the inner-most travel lanes of S. Claiborne (adjacent to the neutral ground) for six to eight months, into the summer of 2024.
"These closures are necessary to accommodate waterline installation work as part of the South Claiborne Transmission Main construction project," SWBNO said in a statement.
The utility is replacing a 48-inch water main, the sixth such replacement project it has undertaken since 2021, and says it has five more of such projects in the works.
