Jefferson Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng says they had no choice, but to cancel Mardi Gras parades on Fat Tuesday.
"The National Weather Service say is reporting that confidence is high that we will experience gusty winds over 40 miles per hour, and up to 60 miles per hour is possible."
Sheng says starting early was not an option with winds expected to pick up early in the morning.
"These are not safe conditions."
She fears that floats could tip over and land on people in the crowd.
"I know this news is very, very disappointing... but Mother Nature has just decided not to work with us."
Sheng says they are looking a several options for rescheduling.
The city of New Orleans is expected to announce a decision on parades by noon today.
