An inmate in the Jefferson Parish Jail has died, and authorities say they do not believe foul play is involved.

According to Sheriff Joe Lopinto, a deputy found the inmate unresponsive in the intake booking area around 4 a.m. Thursday. EMS and jail medical staffers tried to revive the 68-year-old man, but they were unsuccessful. Medical personnel pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Lopinto says the man was arrested last Friday and was being held in the jail as a fugitive from another jurisdiction.

The investigation into the inmate’s death continues.
