A small plane crashed at the Slidell Municipal Airport today after missing the runway by “several hundred feet”. Both pilots are said to be ok despite reports that the aircraft was on fire at one point.
Daniel Seuzeneau with Slidell police told WWL they received the call from the airport about the crash around 2:15 PM today. They were told the plane was on fire, but when they arrived they found it moderately damaged.
“We, unfortunately, expected the worst, and we went out there, and much to our surprise both pilots were ok and the plane was not in flames although it did miss the runway by several hundred feet and sustained some moderate damage for a plane,” said Seuzeneau who confirmed both pilots were bruised up, but no with major injuries.
Seuzeneau said there’s no indications as to what caused the crash at this point, but noted the area was very windy when he arrived.
It is expected that the crash will cause issues for other planes scheduled to land or depart the airport today, as the crashed aircraft will need to be removed and the field is covered in first responders.
